Recently we looked at strengthening your staff by sharing the data from your Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). As a reminder, KPIs are practice metrics that connect revenue drivers to financial results. The example that we shared was the tracking of recommended procedures and utilizing this data along with booked procedures to identify opportunities in your practice processes. This week, we’ll look at the additional benefits of sharing revenue-driving data, including improving staff performance. Data in all forms provides clarity and helps you and your staff prioritize and respond to practice needs and opportunities. KPIs specifically drive staff alignment and ensure accountability at all levels of your practice. To obtain the full value of your KPIs, the tracking and communication of the data must be consistent. Tracking should align with staff responsibilities and should be the ultimate responsibility of your practice manager.

For example, new patient data should be summarized by the person that primarily manages new patient onboarding. Recommended procedures should be tracked by the surgical coordinator or the staff member responsible for booking the procedures. Connecting your staff’s daily responsibilities to KPIs drives ownership, accountability, and performance improvement. If there’s inconsistency in your tracking process, a conversation with your practice manager to clarify their needs and your expectations will highlight their accountability. Managing your practice KPIs is vital to improving practice results. It takes time to develop the key performance indicator component of an infrastructure. With that, your practice manager must embrace and manage this critical component of your practice or you will continue to miss growth opportunities. Utilizing all components of your KPI’s will ensure that accountability is not only in the numbers but also in the process itself.
