Last quarter we discussed unlocking practice growth by embracing a growth mindset in all areas of your practice. This quarter we’ll explore the connection between mindsets and reducing burnout among physicians.
At first glance, the solution appears straightforward: embrace change and burnout becomes a rarity. Yet, the reality is far more complex. Why is it that individuals, including physicians, often resist change? The answer lies in our inherent discomfort with the unknown. Faced with the choice between familiarity and uncertainty, we consistently gravitate towards the former. Consider the countless individuals who embark on a journey to adopt healthier lifestyles at the start of each year. Many fail when confronted with the discomfort of new routines—whether it's waking up earlier, enduring sore muscles, or adjusting their diet. Despite their initial resolve, they retreat to the comfort of familiarity, resigning themselves to an unhealthy status quo.
As Peter McWilliams, a self-help author astutely observed, "Be willing to be uncomfortable. Be comfortable being uncomfortable." Indeed, the pursuit of our dreams often demands that we confront discomfort head-on—a small price to pay for realizing our aspirations.
In my work with clients, I often observe the challenges they face in embracing change, whether it's in establishing effective communication strategies, setting goals, or implementing systems for staff recognition and accountability.
Embracing change demands a formidable level of courage—a quality that eludes many. Yet, it is through this courage that we cultivate resilience, strengthen our practices, and foster growth, both professionally and personally.
