Recently we've looked at the importance of being intentional with your staff -specifically dedicating time to communicate and collaborate. The role that a practice staff plays in impacting results and reputation cannot be overstated.
As we work to strengthen a practice, we ask two questions. What's the delta between current results and practice potential? And what's the potential of your current staff? The two are clearly connected, however determining your staff’s potential can be much more challenging than comprehending your practice’s potential.
Helping your staff achieve their potential will help your practice move closer to its potential.
An organization, regardless of their product or service, is only as good as its people. When a leader supports the growth of their staff, they are demonstrating that they are investing in their team.
To begin the process of finding your staff’s potential, start by asking them what they would like to learn that would help them to be more successful in their role. We’ve worked with leaders to have their surgical coordinators spend a day with them in the OR. Through this experience, they understand all the points of patient contact and communication with the patient and their loved ones. We’ve worked with leaders to provide their staffs with training on a multitude of things including growing their compassion and phone etiquette. The point is to ask and not to make training an event but rather an on-going process that helps your staff find their potential while also helping you achieve your practice’s full potential.
For example, we encourage surgical coordinators to spend a day in the OR with their surgeon(s) on a quarterly basis. With this, they can stay current on logistics and other information that will help them to perform their responsibilities at a higher level. A recent OR training day by a surgical coordinator found that the published entrance to a newly renovated surgical center was a difficult entry point for patients with lower body injuries. They identified a secondary entrance that was much more accommodating for these patients and immediately begin to communicate this information to their patients.
Other clients have sent their staff members to formal workshops or reimbursed them for online classes. Training can occur in a multitude of ways and if your staff is motivated to find their potential, together you can achieve your practice’s potential.
If you’re ready to close the gap between your practice results and the potential of your practice start by helping your staff achieve their potential and if you’d like support, please contact me smays@impactpracticeconsultants.com.
