Last month we looked at how employee morale connects to practice results. This month, we’ll look closer at how your view of your staff impacts morale and results.

An investor’s mindset requires that you place your money where you would like it to grow. If you think of your staff as only an expense and not as a component of your marketing strategy, it’s time to consider a change in basic assumptions.

Hiring the right employees is step one. To build a successful practice, it’s imperative that you invest your time and money to support your goals and the foundation of any business is its people.

Your staff is the first point of contact for your patients. Whether it’s by phone or email, your staff’s responsiveness and professionalism are key to providing patients with the confidence that they are selecting the right physician.

Think about a time when you've contacted a service business with a question and the person that you engaged with lacked basic knowledge or enthusiasm. That interaction either strengthened or weakened the level of trust that you have in that business.

Now consider a new patient contacting your office. Are you confident that every member of your staff is knowledgeable, enthusiastic and speaks with confidence about your skills and abilities?

Investing in your staff not only requires a financial investment but also requires a continued investment of your time. Consistent meetings allows you to share practice successes and opportunities and ensures that your staff has a platform of support. Communication with your staff ensures that expectations are aligned and drives accountability with all team members.

Allowing your staff to observe you in the exam room and the OR, are other ways to ensure your staff is connected to not only what you do but how you do it. This insight provides your team with information that ensures that they are able to speak confidently to your patients.

Investing in your staff through meetings and learning opportunities strengthens individual skills, employee morale and ultimately your practice.
