Recently we’ve looked at moving your practice forward and the significance of your staff in practice growth. This week, we’ll look at the key areas of a practice infrastructure that will develop your staff and strengthen your practice.

As a physician you are quite familiar with the value of systems and processes that are used in medicine including patient exams and the OR. The processes that are followed ensure clarity of responsibilities and drive accurate diagnoses and successful outcomes.

If you’re ready to strengthen you practice, follow these steps.

Step 1. Building an infrastructure for your practice starts with your values. Your values are the foundation of the systems and processes that define your infrastructure and are the foundation for your staff to make decisions. Your values define the principles that exemplify who you are personally and professionally. To determine your values, consider the beliefs that have traditionally guided your decisions. Examples of values may include honesty, compassion, accountability, and service.

Step 2. Once your values are identified, the next step is evaluating staff roles and responsibilities. To determine what changes, need to be made, ask your staff to provide feedback on their job descriptions. Have their responsibilities expanded or been reduced since they were hired? Do their current responsibilities match their job title? Accurate job descriptions provide clarity for your staff on their responsibilities and allow for transparent accountability.

Step 3. After values and job descriptions, development of a communication strategy will ensure consistent execution of practice priorities. Weekly meetings with your staff to discuss practice results and opportunities drives innovation and accountability. Consistent communication provides a foundation for your staff to collaborate on solutions and build systems and processes that will strengthen your practice.

Providing your staff with an infrastructure ensures that their daily actions align with your practice goals and will positively impact your results.

Once the above processes are successfully implemented, additional systems to screen new patients, monitor procedure recommendations, and staff development may be added to further strengthen your infrastructure.
