Recently we looked at the value of a growth mindset. This week, we’ll apply a growth mindset to the lessons from 2020.

There were clearly many lessons from 2020. Let’s take a closer look at three key learnings that the pandemic taught us that we should continue to embrace.

The most obvious change was how we learned to utilize technology to “see” patients. Prior to 2020, Telehealth was a nice-to-have but now it’s a must-have. Providing patients with options for virtual or in-person visits is now the norm. It’s also a great way to optimize your patient schedule.

Secondly, we learned that practice staff roles could expand to include additional responsibilities, helping to develop staff while reducing payroll costs. We learned that staff members who are enthusiastic learners can handle responsibilities beyond traditional roles. A strong practice grows from within and this begins with helping your staff learn new skills.

Lastly, and most importantly, we were reminded of the value of our staff. We learned to be more attentive and compassionate in our conversations. Silos were torn down as children sat on their parent’s laps during virtual meetings and we were able to witness firsthand the daily challenges of being a working parent. Leaders focused on ensuring that their staff was safe and offered words of encouragement and care. Many leaders also found ways to ensure that the financial impact on their staff was minimized. These examples of caring leadership are foundational to building a strong team and a strong practice.

Applying a growth mindset to the lessons of 2020 will strengthen your practice and provide a solid foundation to move your practice forward in 2021 and beyond.
