We started the year by looking at building your practice culture with intention.
In this month's practice tip, we’ll look at the most critical investment that you must make to build a strong culture and that’s investing in your staff. When business owners think about their staff, they are programmed to see their staff as an expense.
If a staff is seen as an expense before an investment, the decisions to hire, compensate and promote are negatively impacted. Staffing decisions are short sighted and reactive. When a staff is seen as an investment, decisions are made for the future not just the present.
Yes, a staff is a significant financial investment but they are not an investment that you can select and ignore. Investing in your staff extends far beyond the financial commitment and requires a consistent commitment of your time.
One of the first questions new clients ask me is how much they should invest to ensure that their staff is successful. This is where I explain that your responsibility to your staff extends beyond salary and benefits. Spending time with your staff is the most important commitment that you can make to develop your staff and grow your practice. Blocking your schedule for thirty minutes each week to align your staff means you are giving up patient time, but the return on investment is immeasurable.
Over the last two years, we have seen employees leaving employers not because of the compensation but because they want to be valued and provided with opportunities for growth. An employee centric communication strategy can provide both.
If you're looking at 2022 and want to know what's the number one thing that you can do differently to improve your practice, schedule time with your staff. Understanding the importance of leading your team and aligning them will allow your staff and practice to grow.
