You can ask one hundred people that question and get one hundred different answers (unless they are all parents because they would say their children). As a practice owner, the answers may be related to what’s happening in your practice this week, this month, or this quarter. The author Harold Stephen said, “There is a great difference between work and concern. A worried person sees a problem, and a concerned person solves a problem.”

I’ve found that by focusing on measurable areas of a practice rather than worrying about hypothetical events will result in positive actions and more sleep. Examples of things that we often focus on are the booking window, new patients, procedures, and employee turnover to name a few. By monitoring these key performance indicators, (KPIs), you can solve a problem before it has a long term negative impact on your practice.

There are many things that impact your KPIs. Priorities can be rearranged but one measurable clearly links your KPIs and that’s employee turnover. With unemployment at record lows, and resignations at record highs, there is a focus on staff retention. Retaining your staff does not occur because you just celebrated Employee Appreciation Day and bought your staff lunch. An employee retention strategy requires a consistent effort to focus on listening to your staff and providing regular opportunities to develop and grow your staff.

Our clients are committed to consistent meetings with their teams and frequent one-on-one check ins. This in combination with providing learning opportunities through exam room and OR observations, allows the team members to gain more insight into diagnosis and treatment as well as the patient experience and provides an opportunity for staff member growth.

While there are reasons for sleepless nights, the management of your practice doesn’t have to be one of them. Focus on developing a comprehensive recruiting, hiring, training and communication strategy and fill your world with more solutions and less worry.
