Your Internal Reputation = Your Results

Last month we looked at key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and the impact that employee turnover has on all KPIs. In this month’s tip we’ll look at a component of your practice that impacts employee turnover and connects to all areas of your practice and that’s your internal reputation.

What is your internal reputation? The reputation that you have within your practice and institution with current and past employees. You may be known as the physician that says good morning to the security guard and asks the nurse about her daughter’s graduation or the physician that walks past everyone without so much as a hello.

How does this impact your practice results? Your internal reputation determines who applies for open positions in your practice. If you have a reputation as being a supportive and kind leader, potential employees will want to be a part of your practice. If you are known as the physician who only interacts with other employees when it’s required, and whose staff turns over frequently, then high performing employees are not applying for your open positions.

The best employees have a desire to work with leaders that are kind and inspirational. They want to be a part of a practice where the physician appreciates and recognizes their efforts. Employees want to be a part of a practice where the leader provides a safe space to learn from mistakes and consistently communicates in a professional and positive manner.

Just like patients who don’t want to see a physician with a three-star reputation, highly skilled employees don’t want to work for someone with a negative reputation. Every patient and every employee that you cross paths with from the receptionist to the OR tech, has formed their opinion of you based on your interactions with them.

To lead a successful practice, you must attract top talent and this requires being intentional with your daily interactions.

As you consider how to improve your practice results, consider what Mark Crowley, Heart Based Leader, Speaker, and Author says, “Define what you want to be known for and then align every action you take to it.”
